The City of Konya: Rumi and the Whirling Dervishes

In 1925, the Republic of Turkey passed a law that closed down dervish convents of all Sufi sects as part of its sweeping reforms aiming to modernize the country. This brought the end of the Konya Mevlevi dervish convent, the house of the Tomb of Mevlana.
