Rosewater, also known as rose distillate or rose hydrosol, is a byproduct of the steam distillation process used to extract essential oil from rose petals. While traditionally made in small batches by hand, rosewater can also be produced on an industrial scale using modern equipment and techniques. The industrial production of rosewater begins with the cultivation of roses specifically grown for their aromatic properties. The most common rose variety used in commercial production is Rosa damascena, also known as the Damask rose. These roses are typically grown in regions with favorable climatic conditions, such as Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, and India.
