The chances of surviving both gestation and birth are low, so the Indonesian twins defied the odds to make it through even though they were forced to lie flat for the first three years of their life. A team of surgeons performed a painstaking operation to amputate their third leg and stabilise their hips, so they were able to sit up normally. Their condition has been likened to the famous conjoined twins Ganga and Jamuna Mondal of India who were dubbed ‘The Spider Girls’. Cases of conjoined twins are rare with one occurring in 50,000 to 200,000 live births after a single fertilised egg splits and develops into two individuals.
