The Uncaged Lens: Jafar Panahi's Defiant Cinema

Panahi's film 3 Faces (2018) saw him venture out onto the open road again, traveling with actress Behnaz Jafari to a remote Iranian village in search of a young girl whose family bars her from pursuing an acting career. This road movie structure allowed him to explore the tensions between modern and traditional Iran, and the continuing societal constraints on women. The film won the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
