 
 The turning point in Panahi's career, and his life, came in 2010. Following his arrest and conviction on charges of "making propaganda against the system," he was sentenced to six years in prison and given a 20-year ban on making films, writing screenplays, traveling abroad, or giving interviews. This severe sentence drew widespread international condemnation from the film community and human rights organizations.
