The Enduring Mystery of Freemasonry
The organizational structure of Freemasonry is intentionally decentralized, with the basic unit being the local Lodge, which operates under the supervision of a regional or national Grand Lodge—of which there are hundreds worldwide, each sovereign and independent. The journey of a Mason is fundamentally divided into three degrees, often referred to as Craft or Blue Lodge Freemasonry: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason. These degrees are presented to the candidate through a series of dramatic rituals and allegorical morality plays, each teaching a specific set of ethical and philosophical lessons drawn from the tools and traditions of the stonemasons. Progression through these degrees encourages self-improvement, adherence to moral law, and the development of integrity and community service, providing a structured path for personal growth rather than the acquisition of political power.
