A suicide bomber detonated the explosives he carried at the back of the Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan hospital. Three other attackers with automatic weapons and grenades entered the complex, security officials said.
One bomber died and the others were killed by security forces, according to France Presse. The CNN network says 50 people were injured in the attack.
The hospital has capacity for 400 patients and is close to two other hospitals as well as several embassies.
Abdul Qadir, who is a hospital employee, told The Associated Press that a man in a white coat shot him and his colleagues. He said at the center of operations where seven patients were prepared to undergo surgery at the time of the attack.
